4Operation
American Braves
What is Operation American Braves?
This is an effort by the staff and
students of the Fonda-Fultonville to reach out to servicemen
and women serving overseas via letters and "care packages"
of items that are in short supply in the field.
How did the program get started?
Teacher Nancy Deitch remembers the
'60s and '70s when well-meaning Americans, who were angered
by the Vietnam War, took their frustrations out on the
returning veterans. She wanted to do something locally to
let our current military personnel that America supported
them as individuals—regardless of feelings concerning the
American government's policies.
Is this some kind of political statement?
NO! Our lone purpose is to support the
individuals who are struggling far from family and friends.
How is the school involved?
The school serves as the collection
point for supplies and coordinates e-mail and written
communication between local members of the community and the
men and women overseas.
How can I become involved?
You can help in three ways:
-
Contribute goods (click here to
view a list of requested items)
-
Donate money to help offset the
cost of shipping packages.
-
Write an occasional card or letter
to one of the people on our list.
Do I have to be a teacher or student?
No, Operation American Braves is open
to anyone residing in our school district.
Is this safe for our children?
Yes, all letters, emails, and goods
are passed through Mrs. Deitch to insure the safety of our
children.
