man performing a magic trickIt's Magic! Or is it Science?

(October 2006) Our elementary students were delighted and amazed as guest magician Mr. Fish performed a little magic AND science during a special presentation in the auditorium.

Mr. Fish demonstrated how simple scientific principles combined with a little showmanship and sleight of hand creates the wonderful art magic. Using air pressure, he turned a full glass of water upside down. With a special magnet, he made silk flowers move mysteriously.

Many of magic tricks and illusions (things that are different than they appear) that have astounded audiences for centuries are easily explained scientifically. After Mr. Fish performed a trick, he explained how he did it and how science played a part. Like any good magician, however, he did not explain everything.
