Classroom
skills pay off in button contest
Walk into any classroom and at some point you
will likely hear a student complain, "Why do we have to learn
this anyway?" Finding that link between what students learn in
school and what happens in real life can be a challenge for both
teachers and students.
Technology teacher Barb Barker found a very real
way to help make that connection.
"Everything we do in this class has a
practical application," said Mrs. Barker. "Even if students do
not go on to be graphic designers, they learn the importance of
paying attention to detail and other valuable lessons they will
use all of their lives. Fort Plain's button contest was a great
way to put their skills to the test."
Her students used their computer design skills
to create artwork for the Village of Fort Plain's "Last Night
Commemorative Button Design Contest." Zachary Kenyon, James
Snyder, Zachariah Sahler, Tom Singleton, Justin Brooking, Aaron
Fishman, Zachary Welke, and Dylan O'Neil each submitted designs.
In the end, sophomore Zachary Kenyon earned first prize for his
design of a children's
button.
In a letter to Mrs. Barker, Program Chairman
James Katovitch said, "It is with great pride that I can
announce that Zachary Kenyon's Last Night Button Design was
chosen for the children's button. His is the winner of the $25
first place award. The committee liked the clear, plain, and
simple lines of the design. They felt that it portrayed an image
that the children could understand, be happy to wear, and keep
as a commemorative souvenir."
He also acknowledged everyone's submissions by
sending Stewart's Free Ice Cream Sundae coupons.
The Last Night celebration is an end-of-the-year
community alternative to other New Year's Eve celebrations. The
family-oriented event includes children's entertainers such as
storytellers and a marionette show. Attendees purchase a button
from area merchants and the village and the button allows
entrance into any of the evening's venues.
