has work published in National Geographic Kids Magazine
Fourth-grader Monica Wendell loves rock climbing almost as much as
she loves to draw.
One day last year she was flipping through National Geographic
Kids magazine and saw that the “Art Department” section was
looking for pieces of art that fit the theme “You Are An
Adventurer.”
This theme was perfect for Monica and her love of rock climbing,
which she does several times a year with her family, so she
started working on her piece titled “Rock Climbing Central.”
She submitted the piece to the magazine, and in August 2004 she
received a letter from the magazine saying they were considering
her piece for the December 2004/January 2005 issue.
“I got excited,” Monica said about receiving the letter, adding
that it led to a long wait.
Monica has a monthly subscription to the magazine, so each month
when it came she turned straight to the “Art Department” section
to see what was there. When the December/January issue came, her
mother was the first to see it. Monica said her mother called her
to the garage where she showed her that her piece was one of three
in the art section.
“Obviously we screamed,” she said of when she saw her work in
print.
Monica said that art is her favorite subject in school, other than
math. Her teacher, Katie Briggs said Monica is constantly drawing
and there are several of her pieces displayed in the classroom.
When Monica brought the magazine to school, Briggs said the class
was very proud of her. They passed the magazine around, all
staring at Monica’s work.
Monica said the piece, drawn in Crayon, is of her rock climbing.
Her favorite thing to draw, she said, is people.
As for future work, Monica plans to continue drawing, and may even
submit another piece to National Geographic Kids one day.
