PreK class
graduation set
Ms. Wieczenski's Pre-kindergarten class paid a
surprise visit to the Superintendent's Office on June 9 with an
important message, "We are graduating on June 22nd!"
The class not only reminded Dr. Hoffman of the
event, but they extended a personal invitation for him to
attend. He immediately accepted.
Trying to make his visitors more comfortable, Dr. Hoffman asked the class what they had
learned this year. Ms. Wieczenski explained that the class had
learned letter sounds and numbers. So, Dr. Hoffman decided to
test them asking what sound the letter "k" makes. Almost in
unison, the children responded with the "k" sound. He asked
about the letter "o" and the students answered with the short
vowel sound for "o."
They did so well, I thought I might stump them
with a tougher number question," said Dr. Hoffman.
He asked what number comes after 100. Almost in
perfect unison, the 18 four-year-olds shouted, "101!" Before
leaving, Ms. Wieczenski then gave them a chance to really show
off as they loudly recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
"These children are coming into kindergarten
prepared for reading," said Dr. Hoffman. "Kindergarten today is
more than sandbox and playtime; it's academic in nature.
Kindergarten graduates leave knowing how to read. Pre-K paves
the way by providing young children with the basic skills they
will need next year."
Pre-K graduation will be held in the Middle
School Chorus Room on Tuesday, June 22 at 9:30 a.m. for the
morning session and 1:30 p.m. for the afternoon session.
